…and even more Marylanders to Ohio and Indiana

During research of the Maryland militia in the War of 1812 F. Edward Wright examined over a thousand applications for bounty land (authorized in 1850 and 1855) and pensions (authorized in 1781 and 1888). It became apparent that a large number of veterans had migrated to Ohio, Indiana and other points in the mid-west by the time they or their widows applied. Following are abstracts of some of the claims made by veterans in Ohio and Indiana. Many of the veterans can be found in Henry Peden’s books Marylanders to Ohio and Indiana and More Marylanders to Ohio and Indiana. The names of these veterans are noted but their abstracts are not included to avoid duplication of Peden’s work. The abstracts reveal genealogical information about the veterans and his family. Oft times mentioned are acquaintances who attested to the military service, marriage and death of the veteran. Relatives and neighbors often accompanied the applicant to the courthouse to substantiate the claim. These records frequently contain statements of siblings and in-laws.

Following the veteran's name in each abstract are a series of numbers which identify the bounty land claim and or the pension applications. In the case of the bounty land claim there are a series of numbers representing the year of the act by which the applicant makes the claim - followed by number of acres granted - followed by an arbitrary number for that veteran's file. "Rej" signifies that the claim was rejected. (Claims were frequently rejected for the lack of a sufficient number of days of service or as the result of incorrect information such as the name of the veteran's captain.) The pension files are identified by the veteran's S.O. and S.C. numbers and widow's W.O. and W.C. numbers. Following these file numbers is the rank held by the veteran and then the name of the captain as given by the applicant.
