Richmond County was formed in 1692 when Old Rappahannock County was divided into Richmond and Essex Counties. Old Rappahannock was formed in 1656 from Lancaster County. These abstracts are taken from the first three deed books of the county. The so-called deed books contain not only deeds but also related documents such as powers of attorney, bonds, original grants or patents and cattle marks.
