Cecil County, Maryland Marriage References 1674-1824
Henry C. Peden, Jr.

This book is a comprehensive compilation of marriage references, actual and implied, in Cecil County, MD for its first 150 years from 1674 when the county separated from Baltimore County through 1824. It is much more than just names and dates. In many instances the reader will find births and deaths, names of parents, children, and other relatives, places of residence and burial, military service information, and places of residence and burials. These marriage references were gleaned from licenses, land records, probate records (wills, accounts, inventories, and distributions), bibles, church records, tombstone inscriptions, newspapers, military records, and family histories. Marriages were also found in nearby New Castle County, Delaware and in Chester and Lancaster Counties, Pennsylvania. It should be noted that in some cases the dates of marriage are precise dates while in other cases, due to the lack of actual marriage records, they are approximate or undetermined. 2008. 358 pp.

The Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants (2008 Edition)
Gary Boyd Roberts

The best royal descents, i.e. from the most recent king, of over 600 immigrants to the American colonies or the United States who were themselves notable or left descendants who were notable in American history. Once again Gary Boyd Roberts has revised all recent royal descent research, some yet unpublished, and produced an authoritative, up-to-date compendium. In the 2006 edition he added eighteen new immigrants to his previous 650. In this edition, he adds twenty-eight more, so that with a few disproofs (Curwens/Corwins of Massachusetts and New York, Byes of Pennsylvania, and Edwardses, one Evans and Hugh Jones of Pennsylvania), this total is now 688.

New immigrants in the 2008 edition include Jane Greene Poole (wife of the earlier treated William) and Margaret Estouteville Shepard (ancestor of the two presidents Adams and FDR), both of Massachusetts; Audrey Barlow Almy of Rhode Island (ancestor of presidents Harding, Nixon, and Carter);Henrietta Constantia Worsam Meade and Charles Willing of Pennsylvania; and various Virginia immigrants. New Virginians include Mrs. Elizabeth Wood Barcroft, an ancestor of Jimmy Carter; John Baskerville; Benjamin Harrison, immigrant ancestor of the two presidents Harrison; Mrs. Dorothy Walker Jones; Philip Ludwell, ancestor of the Stratford Lees and the first husband of Martha Washington; and Stephens Thompson, ancestor of the Masons of Gunston Hall. Also newly included: two new North Carolinians—John Alston (a third cousin of John Alston of South Carolina) and Mrs. Ann Coddington Fenner, an ancestor of Senator John McCain.

Appendix VIII contains new descriptions of recently revised, likely but unproved, royal descents for the five Winslow brothers, John Whitney, and John Whitcomb. 2008. 985 pp. Hardbound.

Abstracts of the Testamentary Proceedings of the Prerogative Court of Maryland Volume 12: 1709-1712; Libers 21 (pp. 207-347), 22 (pp. 1-147)
Vernon L. Skinner, Jr.

Readers of this excellent series know that the Prerogative Court was the focal point for probate in colonial Maryland. All matters of probate went directly to the Prerogative Court, which was located in Annapolis, Maryland’s colonial capital. The Prerogative Court was also the colony’s court for equity cases—resolution of disputes over the settlement and distribution of an estate. Volume XII contains abstracts of the records for the period 1709 to 1712, as found in Libers 21 and 22. Mr. Skinner has combed through administration, bond, will, inventory, administration account, and final balance entries for these years. The abstracts are arranged chronologically by court session. For the most part, the transcriptions state the names of the principals (testators, heirs, witnesses, administrators, and so forth) as well as details of bequests, names of slaves, appraisers, and more. This volume refers to more than 7,500 residents. 2008. 288 pp.

Robert W. Hall and Sandra Hall

The Halls' latest work includes abstracts of the earliest land records (the patents) grouping the information by owners and by hundreds. The level of detail included clearly separates this work from rent roll abstracts and land records. Patentees and others named in the patent document are identified and the relationship or involvement is defined. This includes relatives, former tract owners, persons transported and/or completing service, surveyors, public officials, and occasionally employers. In nearly all cases he identifies neighbors and their tracts and, using data gleaned from other records such as Probate, Judicial Proceedings, church and marriage records, he has identified and included many grants not included in the Rent Rolls. 2007. 364 pp.
